Westlake University

Westlake University, based in Hangzhou and established by the Westlake University Foundation, is a private, small-but-elite research university founded through the joint effort of scientists (led by Yi Gong), social capital and government support — an important experiment in Chinese higher education. General education comes first and major-specific training later: Clinical Medicine majors are confirmed at the end of the second semester of year one (subject to medical-school assessment), other majors at the end of the first semester of year two; every student normally spends one semester at a leading overseas university (overseas costs are borne by the student, with funding support for those in financial need).
